  • Pest build up

At this time of year in winter, pests can build up and gain hold of your precious plants. It is a time when we might take our eyes off them more as they need less watering so we might not handle our orchids as often as we should. You would have thought pests are less of a problem now but you would be surprised, some are lurking and over wintering, slowing rebuilding for the spring. ...

  • Storing Pleione Orchid bulbs

Pleione are easy Orchids to grow and the majority of them require cold temperatures when dormant. Some, such as P. maculata flower in the Autumn and require a minimum temperature of 10c so this post won't relate to this type with regards storage when dormant. Simply, they aren't much harder to grow than Tulips or Daffodils which require a dormant phase. Once the leaves have done their job they will turn yellow and die just like most ...

  • Dividing and potting Orchids.

It is the time of year when dividing and re potting of orchids is best done, orchids are starting to really get going with new growths hopefully a plenty! Personally, I would only divide an orchid if it is becoming untidy with maybe bare areas of growth, or it is becoming that big that dividing is the only option. In dividing, I may only mean to remove parts of the orchid, which is very easily done, ...

  • Orchid greenhouse shading and also protect them in the home…

It really is time to think about how much strength the sun is generating, especially behind glass, so shading is needed to prevent leaf scorch. I gauge when to put on the shading by the temperature inside the greenhouse, as soon as the temperature consistently reaches 29c or 85f, then the shading goes on. For a greenhouse that will mean putting up a shade cloth, shade cloth comes in various shade percentages, I have chosen 50% this ...

  • Let the orchid growth commence!

We really are getting a taster of warmer, longer days and it really does put a spring in your step and smile on your face. You can literally smell growth, in the greenhouse this is even more noticeable as the sun warms the place and soon increases the temperature which is a welcome addition. And with the increase in light and day length, orchids soon kick in to growth and many in to flower. Cool ...
